Defeat Snatched From The Jaws Of Victory

Match Report - Fives 8th May by Brad Williams

Having been soundly beaten by Fives over the last two seasons Myddelton were hoping to put in a good performance on Sunday. This however was looking a little unlikely with Arthur crying off on the morning of the game due to Pam being unwell and guest Krutin crying off when he was unable to get his car started. To make things worse, Alan who had made himself available failed to return from holiday with Julie until monday morning claiming that their flight had been delayed by 24 hours.
So Myddelton arrived for the game with just eight players. Oppo skipper Colin Hogan fearing the worst won the toss and chose to bat, then offered us a sub fielder and Ramesh who had arrived with his gear and was keen to play.
Sameer Patel opened the bowling as usual, but with only eight players and just 4 regular bowlers decided that Dave Fitzgerald would be his opening partner for this 40 overs match.
Fitzy bowled well, with a good length most of the time. His first wicket was that of Praful who scored 23, most of which were scored to the leg side off good length slog sweep's. Fitzy finished with 2-46 off eight overs. Sameer had replaced himself after his usual 4 over spell with Terry Bateman who proceded to bowl in much the same way as last week finishing with 8-4-17-1 and Anuj who had already taken one catch at mid wicket somehow managed to take three c&b's before dropping two more chances. Then to the surprse of most of the side he brought on Ken Mottram who has bowled just two overs in the last three seasons. Ken bowled ok but struggled with direction as he bowled thirteen wides. Rohan took an excellent stumping off a Brad Williams seamer towards the end of an innings that had lost its way in the middle with Sujan making little attempt to score off the bowling of TB. Fives finished on 158-9 when they had been 66-7 - a little dissapointing but well within reach of Myddelton with two players in good form and a couple due some runs.
Lee Stevens and guest Ramesh opened the batting and it wasn't long before Lee played over the top of a swinging delivery from Dipak and in form Brad Williams came to the crease. Ramesh was bowled in the next over and Myddelton were 1 wide for the loss of two wickets. A lot had been made of the fact that Dipak had taken Brad's wicket in 4 of the last 5 games but this time Brad answered the critics by using his feet and playing Dipak through the on side with the occasional cover drive before Dipak completed his most expensive spell against MHCC for five matches 8-1-36-1. Brad and Rohan had put on 54 when Rohan sliced one to cover in Praful's 7th over - 55-3. MHCC's leading batters so far this season, were now together at the crease and Brad passed 50 soon after with the score in the 60's, before Sameer got going with 18 off an over, removing another Ramesh from the attack after two overs. Brad now looked for singles to get the big hitting Sameer on strike. Sameer hit two big sixes over square leg, one at each end before, with the score on 132-3 he too sliced one to cover. Brad was out in the next over missing a late cut off a straight one and was bowled. The partnership was 77, Sameer scoring 41 and Brad 70, the score was 136-5 with 15 overs left but only 3 wickets. Terry was run out for two attempting a third, Anuj was caught behind for twelve and Fitzy was caught at silly mid-off 2nd ball leaving Ken Mottram 0 not out and Myddelton down and out.
It was good to see both Ken and Fitzy getting the opportunity to bowl 15 overs between them but having had Fives 66-7 it may be, that the best thing would have been for Sameer to have come back to try and finish off the innings rather than opening up the game and letting the oppo off the hook, especially as we haven't performed against this oppo for some time. That said, Myddelton were strong favourites while Brad and Sameer were together and with both going well should probably have won the game because we only needed 27 runs when Sameer lost his wicket. Two poor shots from both players ended a potential match winning partnership.
The old saying - one wicket brings two - especially after a good partnership, was never truer.
We visit Walthamstow next week and will have to perform better as a team if we are to keep this new fixture for next year.
It would also help if we could get a full side out, without any guest's for the first time this season.
