No Ball, No Balls!! - Hockerill

NO BALL, NO BALL'S !!
a match report by Club Captain Sameer Patel

Myddelton House were a Brad Williams no ball away from victory against Hockerill on Sunday.
The game was an eagerly anticipated one, the players desperate to play as last weeks game at Cottered had been washed out, and also to avenge last years defeat. Earlier in the week it looked like this match would also be washed out but as the week progressed the forecast looked better and the sun was shining on Sunday morning.
On arriving at the ground it still looked pretty wet and the pitch was very green and looked like there might be quite a bit in it for the bowlers. I tossed up with the opposition Captain and called heads which was wrong and he did not hesitate to put us in. I feared the worst but the pitch played quite true. I stuck with my successfull opening partnership of last year of Mark Bateman and Rohan Patel but at 5-2 i rued my descision but luckily Brad Williams and Lee Stevens were on hand to steady the ship, putting on 48 before Lee was caught on the boundary mistiming a drive. I joined Brad at the crease and after a couple of run out scares we were both going well and it was not long before Brad reached his half century. He only made 31 more before he was bowled by the opening bowler who had been brought back on for a second spell. Anuj joined me at the crease and looked good playing his shots with a straight bat until he drove one firmly back at the bowler who flicked it onto the stumps and i was run out. He then carried on with a couple of big sixes before being stumped on 25. The rest of the line up failed to perform with Amit Naik, John Nelson and Arthur Brown all joining opener Mark Bateman with ducks, but even then we managed a respectable 181-9 off 45 overs.
Something happened in the third over of Hockerill's reply which gave Myddelton a big advantage in this game. Sameer Patel took a hat trick with his third, fourth and fifth deliveries knocking over each stump in turn to leave Hockerill in dissaray, but they rallied and in the 4th over Sameer dropped a simple catch off Pegram when on 0 who went on to score 62. He was also dropped by Naik when on 49, this was to prove costly. Also Anuj dropped a simple catch off Beet when he was in single figures and he went on to score 36. Patel went on to take another two wickets before taking himself off to bring on John Nelson, but the Hockerill players continued playing their shots and John was having trouble finding his rythmn, a change was needed and Williams and Bateman were brought on in the hope that we could stem the flow of runs and get some wickets. Bateman got a wicket in his first over and Williams picked up three in relativly quick time, but there was no draw on the cards here. Twenty two runs were required in around 10 overs with 10 and 11 at the crease, Williams bowled a beauty to the number 11, knocking the leg stump out of the ground, but to Myddelton's disarray was called ''No Ball''. This was not the first time Williams had crossed the line. From then on it was touch and go with Rohan Patel dropping a sharp chance off Williams, i brought myself back on in the hope of getting the final wicket but Hockerill got there with some six overs to spare.

Notes:
Lee Stevens took a catch at deep mid-on, making it look a lot easier than it actually was, off the bowling of Mark Bateman - good enough to be the first entry onto the Catch of the Season list.
Mark Bateman was fined £2 for the first Duck of the season. Arthur, Amit and John all fined £1 for their ducks.
Sameer Patel was fined £2 for the first dropped catch of the season and Anuj Bhardwaj was fined for his dropped catch.
